NASA Headquarters
BEM has been working as a prime contractor with NASA
– Kennedy Space Center, Florida, since 1997 and
has been actively engaged in a number of projects. In
2001, we were awarded prime contractor status with NASA
Headquarters in Washington D.C.
ECR Activity Management Handbook.
BEM is the prime contractor in the development of an
Environmental Compliance and Restoration (ECR) Activity
Management Handbook for NASA Headquarters, outlining
procedures and providing guidance to NASA Environmental
Managers for managing environmental remediation and
environmental compliance activities at NASA Centers.
It covers the entire project life cycle, from initial
discovery to site closure.
The handbook provides an overview of the ECR program
and current budgetary procedures. It also outlines environmental
remediation processes and highlights factors that affect
the planning, scheduling, and budgeting of environmental
remediation activities
including identification of potential pitfalls. The
handbook also contains an explanation of how each stage
of the various site remediation efforts relate to the
annual NASA budget cycle.
EMS. BEM staff has assisted NASA with
the development and implementation of an Agency-wide
Environmental Management System (EMS). To date three
NASA Centers have obtained ISO 14001 certification and
the remaining facilities are in the implementation phases
of their EMS. NASA awarded BEM’s EMS coordinator
an Outstanding Contractor Award for her assistance with
developing NASA’s EMS.
Training. BEM developed and presented
numerous training sessions for NASA including presentations
to non-environmental managers dealing with multi-media
issues, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance
issues, and general environmental management for new
environmental professionals. BEM is currently working
with NASA Headquarters to develop a Pollution Prevention
training session to be presented to each NASA Center.
RCRA. BEM is performing various Resource
Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) related activities
for NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) at several sites
throughout the installation. These include Confirmation
Sampling, RCRA Facility Investigations, Corrective Measure
Studies, Interim Measures and Ecological Risk Assessment
support. Due to the highly secure and unique nature
of launch operations at KSC, all activities have been
closely coordinated with KSC support, security, and
site personnel to ensure unencumbered operations.
