Bechtel-SNJLRTS

As part of a $500-million dollar project, BEM was retained by Bechtel Infrastructure Corporation (Bechtel) to provide full environmental support services for the 34.5-mile-long New Jersey Transit Southern New Jersey Light Rail Transit System (SNJLRTS) project, extending from Camden to Trenton, New Jersey. Bechtel is the Design-Build-Operation-Maintenance (DBOM) contractor for New Jersey Transit and is responsible for all aspects of construction on the project. BEM is a valuable member of the Bechtel project team, overseeing and implementing a variety of remedial actions on the project, including soil and groundwater characterization, on-site reuse of contaminated soil, off-site beneficial reuse, underground storage tank (UST) closures, and decontamination/demolition and hazardous waste management activities.

BEM’s primary project objectives are:

  • Timely and cost-effective characterization and management of various types of environmental media to evaluate potential contamination and unanticipated site conditions;
  • Enforcement of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) approved Soil Reuse Plan;
  • Implementation of UST closures, asbestos and lead-based paint abatements, and
  • Continuous regulatory compliance coordination.

To accomplish these objectives, BEM is successfully implementing the following scope of services:

  • Rapid-turnaround environmental characterization and hazardous material/waste management;
  • Innovative soil reuse remedial actions and environmental construction management support;
  • Cost-effective UST, asbestos, and lead paint remedial actions, and
  • Environmental database management system (EDBMS) tracking of soil movement quantities, linked to a Geographic Information System (GIS), and reported to the NJDEP on a quarterly basis.
