Long Island Rail Road

BEM was retained by the MTA- Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to provide hazardous waste, safety and industrial hygiene support services in conjunction with a multi-year, $500-million dollar indefinite quantity contract (IQC). These services were provided to various facilities throughout the New York metropolitan area.

BEM provided comprehensive air monitoring, health and safety and industrial hygiene support services at LIRR locations in Queens, Nassau County and Suffolk County, New York. BEM's work included performing indoor quality surveys, preparing mitigation plans, conducting air monitoring for exposure assessments, and emergency response operations, identifying unknown volatile compounds in air samples. BEM also conducted asbestos surveys and air monitoring, noise surveys and noise dosimetry studies. BEM has been able to successfully respond to the diverse industrial hygiene issues confronting this client. Specific task assignments performed by BEM consisted of:

  • Investigations of air quality in various structures
  • Assessment of chemical exposure to electricians in contact switch repair operations areas
  • Electromagnetic frequency (EMF) assessments
  • Assessment of noise incurred by train operators

In addition, BEM completed a comprehensive air-monitoring program for the contact repair shop operations, to identify operational tasks being performed by LIRR workers that incur the greatest exposure to chemical agents, including asbestos/metals. As part of this program, BEM:

  • Inspected several operations facilities and collected/analyzed breathing air samples for various constituents of concern to determine exposure conditions;
  • Identified potential sources and routes of exposure, and
  • Conducted a Qualitative Health-Risk Assessment simulating the worst-case exposure scenarios and evaluating the potential long-term effects on workers.

Other services BEM provided to the LIRR included air sampling and chemical exposure monitoring and assessments during emergency spill response operations.
