ISO14000/EMS
A well-executed Environmental Management System (EMS)
provides a unified approach to managing environmental
activities, allowing for efficient, prioritized program
execution, improved environmental performance and cost
savings.
BEM's
knowledgeable staff has provided EMS and ISO14000 EMS
program development, training, and auditing for a wide
variety of private and federal sector clients. In our
experience, the most effective approach to EMS development
includes:
- Performing a baseline environmental review to obtain
the necessary information to implement an EMS. The
review is conducted by an audit team with expertise
in both environmental compliance and EMS development
and implementation. The review includes interviews
with key facility personnel, evaluation of environmental
records, and site inspections (using ISO 14001 EMS
protocol), and assesses facility compliance with environmental
regulations, identifying opportunities for EMS development;
- Preparing a comprehensive report describing the
results of the environmental compliance review and
Gap Analysis. The report identifies EMS areas that
meet the ISO 14001 standard, and those needing development
and implementation. The report also provides an overview
of facility operations, environmental compliance issues,
and EMS gap areas, and
- Developing and delivering the EMS plan. Upon completion
of the baseline environmental review and summary report,
BEM professionals will have the tools to develop and
implement the program.
