Industrial Hygiene and Safety
Health and Safety Services: Noise Control
BEM has performed various noise studies in connection
with corridor studies and construction management activities.
Often, new rail construction, roadway construction or
demolition can create a nuisance and/or hearing hazard
for environmental personnel, nearby inhabitants and
natural wildlife populations. BEM’s IH team performs
testing and modeling in an effort to mitigate noise
issues during necessary development or remediation.
All noise-related studies are performed under the direction
of certified industrial hygienists.
A typical project would begin with BEM conducting a noise
survey at a manufacturing facility located in a densely populated
urban area. Sound pressure levels would be measured in the
neighboring residential community, both before and after installation
of equipment, to evaluate compliance with the applicable noise
regulations. Based on the noise survey results, if noise regulation
limits were exceeded, noise abatement actions would be recommended
to mitigate excessive noise levels at the adjacent residences.
The recommendations would be made for the types and placement
of noise barriers and sound adsorbing materials to provide
the most effective noise abatement actions.
