Health and Safety Services: Electro-Magnetic Fields
(EMF)
Power lines, electrical wiring, and appliances all produce
electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) - invisible lines of force
that surround any electrical device. Electric and magnetic
fields have different properties and possibly different ways
of causing biological effects. For example, while electric
fields are easily shielded or weakened by conducting objects
(trees, buildings and human skin), magnetic fields are not.
However, both electric and magnetic fields weaken with increasing
distance from the source.
BEM's IH personnel have the expertise to perform EMF studies
and assist in evaluating the data collected in order to respond
to emergency situations, complaints or as a proactive study
measure. As part of an EMF study, BEM will design and implement
a monitoring plan that will include:
- Identification of EMF sources;
- Collection of EMF readings around those sources;
- Documentation of EMF levels and comparing results to published
exposure limits, and
- Recommending corrective action, as necessary.
