Industrial Hygiene and Safety
Lead Health Protection Programs
BEM’s certified lead-based paint inspectors and risk
assessors have extensive experience performing a variety of
lead-related Industrial Hygiene services.
Buildings with paint in good condition and constructed later
than 1980 are typically evaluated with a hazard screening,
using data from composite dust samples collected from floors
and window troughs. When deteriorated paint is present, composite
paint chips are sampled. Older buildings (pre-1978) with deteriorated
paint are inspected under protocols in the Housing and Urban
Development “Guidelines for the Evaluation and Control
of Lead-Based Paint Hazards in Housing.” This includes
analyzing building components in the field by x-ray fluorescence
(XRF) or having paint chip samples analyzed by a laboratory.
Lead-based paint on exterior building surfaces may peel off
and contaminate underlying soils. BEM’s experts are
experienced with soil evaluations through XRF technology,
soil collection and analysis, remediation alternative analysis
and remedial actions for lead-contaminated soils.
If abatement is necessary, BEM’s EPA Certified Lead
Project Designers develop technical abatement specifications
and contract documents in accordance with applicable federal,
state and local regulations.
BEM is currently performing lead-based paint survey
and management services for a number of clients, including
the US Postal Service, the US Air Force, the Federal Deposit
Insurance Corporation and the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel
Authority.
